Dean Ashton has blasted Tottenham on TalkSport Breakfast (14/10/20 at 7:45 am) and stated that they are being ‘contradictory’ about how they feel about Harry Kane’s current situation.
The former Premier League striker thinks Kane will be ‘frustrated’ that he’s not starting for England and he should be able to make his own decisions because he’s ‘not a child’ despite Tottenham worries.
The Guardian recently claimed that Jose Mourinho is disappointed that Kane might start for his country against Denmark tonight despite those at Spurs feeling their captain isn’t 100% fit.
Former West Ham and England forward Ashton didn’t hold back in his criticism of the Kane-England situation and labelled it ‘really pathetic’
“This is just really pathetic,” Ashton told TalkSport. “It never ever goes away for England managers.
“He [Southgate] is probably frustrating Harry Kane by not playing him. I would imagine the players has got records in the back of his mind. He wants to play. He is the captain of England. So, for him to sit on the bench that will frustrate him.

“I think Gareth has done the right thing. When he says he’s not going to risk players, I believe him. I think he’s the type of person, maybe different to other England managers who really wouldn’t have cared. I genuinely think he does care about the players’ welfare and having a good relationship with the managers.
“You cannot tell me, I know Tottenham own Harry Kane as a player, but you cannot tell me they don’t push him and get him to play when he probably shouldn’t do. It’s a little bit contradictory for me. And, he’s not a child! He’s a grown man. He can make his own decisions whether he can play or not, it’s his career.”

Southgate isn’t the first England manager who has had a run-in with a Premier League boss for how he is handling his player and he won’t be the last.
At the end of the day, all of this depends on where Kane will be in a couple of weeks time. If he’s fit and firing for both club and country then all of this drama will die down.
But if Kane picks up an injury of any kind then a certain Jose Mourinho will be making sure those in the England camp know about it.
