Speaking on the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Alan Shearer has been full of praise for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.
The Frenchman has been one of the rare bright sparks for Spurs this season after a rather questionable debut campaign, and Shearer has been impressed by how he’s stepped up.
“First up is Tanguy Ndombele. His debut season may not have lived up to expectations, but this term he’s definitely improved, and he’s a much more confident player,” Shearer said.
“What’s impressed me most is the way he’s matured into his new role. He’s solid defensively, but he has much more freedom going forward, with the most dribbles of any Spurs player this season. He can also pick out a pass, look at his assist for Son vs Man City.
“He’s certainly given a better account of himself, but I think his consistency still needs some work, but if he can improve there, he can be a vital member of the Spurs squad.”
Shearer is spot on here.
Jose Mourinho may not have done a lot right this season at Tottenham, but one player he did help was certainly Ndombele.
Ndombele was signed by Daniel Levy in 2019, but he didn’t light up the league despite arriving for a big fee.
The midfielder still has a long way to go in terms of proving to be value for money, but he’s definitely played better than he did in his debut campaign.
Fingers crossed Ndombele’s improvement can continue under the next Spurs manager, whoever that may be.
