Kevin Campbell has played down the suggestion of Aaron Ramsdale replacing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as Arsenal’s next captain.
The Gunners need to find a new skipper after manager Mikel Arteta announced this week that Aubameyang had been stripped of the honour over disciplinary issues.
Alexandre Lacazette captained Arsenal to a 2-0 victory over West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.
But despite being the club’s second-most senior player, the Frenchman is out of contract next summer and is therefore not considered a viable, long-term successor for the Gabon international.
When the idea of Ramsdale was floated to former Arsenal hitman Campbell, he pointed to the goalkeeper’s eccentricity as a major reason that he cannot be allowed to inherit the armband.
He told Stadium Astro: “Aaron Ramsdale can be captain, but goalkeepers are crazy. They’re all mad. And he’s another one. He’s crazy! He’s a great goalkeeper but he’s mad. He loves when the opposition fans are giving him stick.”
Campbell is correct
Indeed, Campbell is correct.
Not that Ramsdale is lacking in leadership qualities, because he might be a goalkeeper’s version of Tony Adams or Steven Gerrard for all anyone knows.
But he only joined Arsenal for £24 million during the summer and it wouldn’t reflect well on the Gunners if one of their newest additions is considered the best-possible candidate.
