Tottenham Hotspur were linked with a potentially-massive signing last month.

According to The Standard, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is interested in trying to bring Real Madrid veteran Sergio Ramos to North London.

Yes, he’s 34, but there isn’t a lot of trophy-winning experience in this Tottenham squad and Ramos – who has nine Liga and Champions League titles combined – would bring a hell of a lot of pedigree with regards to silverware.

One of the reasons why he’s linked with a move to the Lilywhites is not only because Mourinho needs defensive reinforcements, but because the player is out of contract in the Spanish capital this summer and Real must either sell this month or risk losing such an influential figure for nothing in July.

But respected and reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has delivered bad news on this front.

Romano, speaking to Give Me Sport, has revealed that Ramos is very much ‘in love’ with los Blancos and ultimately would like to stay in Madrid.

He said: “He wants to stay at Real Madrid. He wants to stay but he wants a two-year contract and Real Madrid, they’re offering always one-year contracts.

“Sergio has the dream of playing in the new Bernabeu, to be the first player, the first captain to be in the new and in the old Bernabeu. So he’s in love with the club.”

Going by this it doesn’t seem all that likely that Tottenham will be able to poach him this month.

Besides, if he wants a two-year contract then is Spurs chairman Daniel Levy going to give him that, on a £300,000-a-week salary? Given his age, probably not.

There’s a half-a-dozen reasons why this doesn’t make sense for the Premier League side, but Romano’s revelation adds an element of doubt.
