Paul Merson has suggested in The Daily Star that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has noted what Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been saying about summer signings.

The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that Klopp saying that Liverpool cannot make big transfers in the summer transfer window will have encouraged Chelsea supremo Abramovich.

According to Sky Sports, the Blues are on the verge of signing Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, despite the Germany international striker having been a summer transfer target for Liverpool.

Chelsea announced back in February 2020 that they had agreed to sign winger Hakim Ziyech from Ajax this summer.

The Express quoted Klopp as saying this month that “all clubs are losing money”, with the German suggesting that Liverpool may not be able to spend a lot on new players this summer.

Merson wrote about Abramovich in The Daily Star: “He’s a winner. He wants Chelsea to be a threat again. And he’s realised if he spends now, they have a chance to close the gap. I think it’s clever.

“Other clubs can’t compete with him while they are losing money because of the virus.

“He’s heard Jurgen Klopp talking about Liverpool not being able to afford big transfers when football is talking about wage cuts.

“Liverpool couldn’t afford Werner. But Chelsea could. And I don’t think the spending will stop there.”

Should Liverpool be worried?

Liverpool will win the Premier League title this season without any problem, but the Reds will find it tough during the 2020-21 campaign.

Manchester City will come back stronger under manager Pep Guardiola, while Chelsea seem to be building a very strong squad.

If Chelsea finish in the top four of the Premier League table this season and make further signings, then they will be a force to be reckoned with, and Liverpool will face a stiff challenge from them, as well as from City.
