Alan Smith has claimed that there is ‘more to come’ from the ‘really talented’ Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli, as he told Super Sunday on Sky Sports.
The former Highbury hero stated that Martinelli has had a ‘dip’ at Arsenal this season, but backed him to turn things around.
Martinelli came off the bench in stoppage-time over the weekend, as the Gunners recorded a 1-0 win over Watford.
The flying forward hasn’t started a Premier League game for Arsenal since August.
But, with the change of form from the North London club of late, it’s going to be pretty difficult for him to change that around and get back into the XI.
Nonetheless, Smith understands what it’s like trying to make an impact upfront for the Gunners, as he pulled his support towards the player.
“A lot more to come from him,” said Smith. “He had that golden spell, didn’t he when he first burst onto the scene.
“He has had a dip since then. He has had injuries, of course. But he’s a really talented player.”
This is an encouraging sign for someone like Arteta that he has a player of Martinelli’s qualities to call upon.
It only increases and takes Arsenal’s squad depth and quality to the next level.
Nuno Tavares is proving that at left-back because, after he filled in for the injured Kieran Tierney, he has been outstanding since, and in truth, when the Scotsman returns, he probably has to sit on the bench.
