Has Darwin Nunez finally announced himself onto the Liverpool stage after his match-winning brace against Newcastle United at St James’ Park?
Even though Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were down to ten men and 1-0 down, the Uruguay striker, who has come under stick since his big-money transfer to Anfield last summer, produced a moment that will ‘live with him forever’, according to Michael Owen.
The former England hitman stated that Darwin Nunez has got ‘some unbelievable attributes’ and he could become ‘something special’ on Merseyside, as he told Premier League Productions (27/08/23 at 6:30 pm).
This time last season, those two goals from Nunez are breezing past the post to the delight of the home crowd.
But not this time, the 24-year-old is proving that patience is a virtue and 12 months is a long time in football.
That was Nunez finally telling the world that he has taken that next step in his career and now he is going to become the player Liverpool fans hoping he will be, with Owen speaking highly of his talents.

“What an impact from Darwin Nunez,” said Owen. “I have always looked at him and thought ‘yes, there are gaps in his game, but wow, he has got some unbelievable attributes’.
“Those two finishes will live with him forever. They were absolutely stunning.
“He can feel a little bit hard done by because he is a top-class striker, brought in for a lot of money and he has hardly had a look in this season. He has been fit and this is the first real chance he has had. Wow, did he grab it with both hands? Both finishes were quite difficult.
“I have said on this show dozens of times, there is something about this lad that I absolutely love. He is direct, he is quick, strong and he has an unbelievable shot on him. He is a brilliant volleyer of the ball. There is lots to like. – he could be something special.”

Stan Collymore eat your heart out
Liverpool and Newcastle have produced some humdinger games over the years, with that 4-3 win and Stan Collymore winner being the standout.
Whilst yesterday’s game didn’t have the volume of goals like that historic match, this one still had the drama and the very late twist.
It was Collymore writing his name into the legendry books in 1996 and now it’s Nunez doing the same in 2023.
