Jamie Carragher has praised Richarlison for showcasing ‘character’ and ‘personality’ after scoring a brace during Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 win over Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday night, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (07/09/22 at 10:35 pm).

Antonio Conte’s side opened up their group game account with three points against a plucky and aggressive Marseille side that were down to ten men early in the second half.

That probably helped Tottenham’s cause because, after their early struggles against the French club, they started to put their foot down on the gas and really attack their opponents.

Both of Richarlison’s goals were almost identical because, Ivan Perisic first floated in a cross from Tottenham’s left, with the Brazil star free as a bird inside the box and guiding the ball home with a brilliant header.

And whilst Harry Kane will feel he is the best at attacking crosses in a Spurs shirt, well, Richarlison showed off that skill once again minutes later, this time Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was the supplier.

Given that Richarlison is an ex-Everton player, he has had his fair share of words with Sky Sports pundit Carragher and this is what the former Liverpool defender had to say about the forward’s brace yesterday.

“Me and Richarlison have got a funny relationship,” said Carragher. “Obviously, it’s a big rivalry Liverpool v Everton. And he’s a good player, no doubt.

“He’s a tendency to go to the ground quite a bit and pretend that he’s a little hurt than normal, so I have called that out in commentary. Fair play to him, he has called me out.

“He has had a real pop at me on social media. And you know what, I didn’t mind that. He has got personality. He’s got the character to actually force himself into that front three of Tottenham’s from last season shows, not just his quality, but his personality. And long may this conflict continue.”

AGGRESSIVE RICHARLISON PERFECT FOR CONTE

If Antonio Conte could mould a player to go out on the pitch and play in the manner in which he would like, then that person wouldn’t be far off from Richarlison.

As well as having the ability to create magical moments, great technical skills and an eye for goal, the former Watford player can also rile up the opposition with his antics.

He plays like he has something to prove, like everyone is criticising him, this tunnel vision mindset when he’s out on the pitch, added with huge passion, that’s why he is loved so much by his own fans.

That was showcased on a weekly basis in Everton colours and now Tottenham fans have more than warmed to the player.
