Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been full of praise for Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk after a commanding performance in the Carabao Cup Final.
The Dutchman was named as Man of the Match against Chelsea, and while he had to face a number of incredibly dynamic and quick attackers, he did a great job at keeping them at bay.
Chelsea had their chances, but van Dijk certainly played a massive part in Liverpool keeping a clean sheet against the Blues.
Wright even went as far as to say that van Dijk is now close to playing his best football after returning from a severe injury.
What’s been said?
Wright gave his view on the defender.
“You know what’s good about what Virgil is doing now, he’s obviously getting back to his full powers because he’s got it now. He’s doing that look where he says ‘try to take me on’, Virgil has that look and you’ll see forwards go for it, stop, and then pass it the other way,” Wright said.

Back to his best
Van Dijk was arguably the best player in the world before he got injured back in 2020, and slowly but surely, he’s returning to that level.
The defender is back into the swing of things, and his confidence in his body has completely returned.
He’s taking risks, and they’re paying off. He’s as brilliant as ever, and while he may still have one more gear to find, he’s back playing at a truly elite level.
