Okay so Newcastle United definitely need another striker signed during the January transfer window.

Yes, the Magpies brought Chris Wood to Tyneside from Burnley this week.

But as Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Watford illustrates, Wood might not be enough to keep Newcastle – who are 19th in the Premier League standings – in the division come May.

Fortunately, the St James’s Park outfit are linked to further reinforcements in an attacking sense – and Anthony Martial of Manchester United is one of them.

According to a report from The Telegraph last week, Newcastle retain an interest in signing the out-of-favour Red Devils hitman, who cost £58 million in 2015.

And interestingly, the France international was completely omitted from the squad for Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

Considering the swirling speculation about his future, it was a potentially major development.

And here’s how supporters of the Old Trafford club reacted on Twitter:

Newcastle potential destination?

In a word, possibly.

Despite having Saudi Public Investment Fund as owners, with a fortune of £700 billion, Newcastle could sign loan players between now and the end of the window.

At least, that’s what Magpies manager Eddie Howe revealed on Friday, that signing players on an initial short-term basis was a possibility.

January is a difficult window to do major permanent business in, meaning that if Martial does leave Manchester United between now and February, it could be on a loan agreement and with Howe in the market for such players, well a transfer to St James’s Park is definitely realistic.
