Some Liverpool fans on social media have been tipping Georginio Wijnaldum for a move to Newcastle after Sky Sports reported that he’s looking for a return to the Premier League.
What’s the story?
Wijnaldum is apparently looking for a move back to England in January after a stop-start first six months in Paris.
It’s unknown where Wijnaldum will end up, Arsenal have been touted as potential suitors, but when a player this talented is on the market, he’ll attract a lot of attention.
Understandably, this rumour has caught the eyes of some Liverpool supporters. After all, the midfielder was only released by the Anfield outfit this summer.
However, interestingly, Liverpool fans weren’t tipping him for a move back to the Reds. Instead, they were predicting a move back to Newcastle.
Wijnaldum’s return to St James’
It has to be said that a return to St James’ Park would make a lot of sense for Wijnaldum.
The midfielder has been linked with Eddie Howe’s side in recent weeks, and he would be guaranteed gametime with the Magpies.
A loan spell would mean that he wouldn’t be stuck playing in the Championship if the worst was to occur at United, while he’s already something of a fan favourite after his time at the club in the mid-2010s.
Wijnaldum spent one season with Newcastle back in 2015/16, but despite only being in the north-east for 12 months, he managed to make his mark.
He scored 11 goals in the league that term, including a four-goal haul against Norwich City and fans would certainly welcome him back with open arms.
