Jamie Carragher has claimed that Liverpool transfer target Antonio Silva is going to be a ’superstar’ after he scored for Benfica during their 4-3 win over Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Liverpool legend praised Silva for opening the scoring against the struggling Italian side, as well as the ‘defensive prowess’ he has to his game, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (25/10/22 at 10:05 pm).

At 18-years-old, Silva is seen as one of the next top talents coming off the conveyor belt of superstars Portugal are producing from the wrecking ball Renato Sanches, Wolves’ deceptively powerful trickster Pedro Neto to another rising Benfica star, Goncalo Ramos.

Liverpool themselves have already dipped into the Portugal market to sign Colombian international Luis Diaz in January and that transfer has worked out a treat – and now they are keen on Silva’s talents.

And whilst Jurgen Klopp is stacked in the centre-back department, it wouldn’t be a surprise if it’s refreshed next summer.

Nonetheless, a player like Silva is catching Carragher’s eye, as he praised the youngster for scoring his first goal for Benfica.

“The first goal is from that young defender I have highlighted a couple of weeks ago, I told you all about him, and there he is, Antonio Silva,” said Carragher.

“I mentioned his defensive prowess. But goalscoring there as well. He is going to be a superstar.”

LIVERPOOL ARE INTERESTED IN ANTONIO SILVA

This is a breakthrough campaign for Silva, yet he has already notched up five Champions League appearances.

That’s going to do his progression the world of good because there is no better classroom than out on the pitch against some of the best teachers.

Benfica have qualified for the knockout stages already, so the levels will increase when the current Portuguese Liga leaders will dive into a much bigger pond.

But someone like Silva should just look towards Manchester City defender Ruben Dias as inspiration that he can rise to the top because his fellow countryman is one of the best in the world right now.
