Steven Gerrard has admitted Morgan Sanson is ‘frustrated’ with his lack of involvement at Aston Villa, so he is now free to leave Villa Park amid interest from Super Lig side Besiktas.

‘Frustrated’ Morgan Sanson can leave Aston Villa amid Besiktas interest

Steven Gerrard has declared Aston Villa will not stand in the way if Morgan Sanson opts to leave the Birmingham natives this summer, via quotes by the Express & Star. The Villa boss admits the Frenchman is ‘frustrated’ with his lack of game time, and respects his irritation.

Sanson is yet to feature in any of the Villans’ matchday sides, ahead of their trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon. Gerrard has so far omitted the midfielder from his plans at Bournemouth and against Everton, following an infuriating campaign once again last term.

The 28-year-old only started three Premier League games during the 2021/22 season from 10 appearances, totalling only 352 minutes. He has also not featured in a top-flight fixture since April 2, having watched six of Aston Villa’s final eight games last term on the bench.

Sanson’s struggles for game time has been the persistent theme of the former France U21 international’s spell with Aston Villa. Since leaving Marseille in January 2021 for £16m on a four-and-a-half-year deal, he has only started in seven of his 20 outings in all competitions.

Injuries have helped limit his opportunities to establish a more prominent presence at Villa Park. Sanson has suffered hamstring and knee issues, plus illnesses, since moving across the English Channel. And his time in claret-and-blue could soon come to a premature end.

Reports by Takvim claim Besiktas are interested in signing Sanson from Aston Villa before the sales shut in Turkey on September 8. The window ends in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 on September 1, while Portuguese sides have to the 22nd.

Aston Villa ready to take big hit in possible transfer to Vodafone Park

Besiktas have approached Aston Villa to discuss a loan deal for Sanson, that would carry an option to buy him. The Super Lig giants are also speaking with the Frenchman’s agent over his possible move to Vodafone Park, whilst manager Valerien Ismael has spoken to Sanson.

Aston Villa value Sanson at €10m (£8.5m), given he still has a further three years to run on his deal. And Gerrard has confirmed he will not block a move, if that is what Sanson wants.

“Morgan’s been very professional,” Gerrard said. “He’s been calm, he’s been training well but, at the same time, he’s frustrated with his game time. I respect that, I understand that. So, if something lands for Morgan that he wants to pursue, we won’t stand in his way.

“At the same time, he’s training well and is pushing to be back in the frame. The window’s still open, there’s still 10-11 days. So, there’s a possibility we could look slightly different come the end of the window.”
