Former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso has named Thiago Alcantara as his favourite midfielder in the world, in an interview with UEFA.
The legendary Spaniard spent five seasons at Anfield and was a fan favourite. He retired in 2017 and is now the manager of his former club Real Sociedad’s B team.
Alonso, a world-class midfielder during his playing days, knows a quality player when he sees one. He has played with some of the best in the world, and Liverpool’s summer signing Thiago is high on his list.
The former Real Madrid man was asked about his favourite current midfielder, and he named Thiago. Alonso called his compatriot ‘fabulous, intelligent and interesting’, and predicted that he would be a huge success at Anfield.
He said: “I have loved watching Thiago Alcántara, the way he has been able to connect with the attacking players, helping to defend with his special qualities. He’s a great friend, but above that, he’s become one of the best midfielders.
“And he’s a fabulous, intelligent, interesting, fun guy to be around in a training session and a dressing room. He loves football; he shows that with his personality and with the way he plays.

“He’s able to connect with his team-mates very easily. He’s done it fantastically at Bayern [München], and I feel that he’s going to do it in the same way at Liverpool, and I love it.”
Thiago is undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in the world. The Spaniard won it all at Bayern Munich and his performance in the final of the Champions League was incredible.
Liverpool have an excellent player now but the Spaniard has had a difficult start. Thiago has spent most of his time on the sidelines and has started just once in the Premier League so far.
He is expected to be back soon, and Reds fans will be hoping Alonso is right about him.
