Glenn Hoddle says he can’t see Oliver Skipp getting back into Tottenham’s starting XI because of Pape Matar Sarr’s performance against Manchester United.

The Tottenham legend says Pape Matar Sarr has ‘everything’ to his game and he is certain that he will start his side’s trip to Bournemouth this Saturday.

That means that Oliver Skipp, who started the opening day draw at Brentford, will have to remain on the bench, even though Hoddle thinks he has done ‘nothing wrong’, as he told Premier League Productions (19/08/23 at 7:45 pm).

Someone like Skipp is more defensive-minded than Sarr, and possibly even Yves Bissouma, but they have attacking traits he doesn’t have.

And that’s their ability to be mobile, carry the ball forward and showcase quick feet when attacking the penalty box to go past players in very tight spaces.

Nonetheless, this is what Hoddle said about Sarr’s performance against Manchester United, which included him opening the scoring, and what that means for Skipp.

“He (Sarr) showed a little bit of everything,” said Hoddle. “Astuteness is his defending. His covering the ground with and without the ball. He can pass as well. He gets his head up, at the right moments.

“I think young Skipp has done nothing wrong, but for me, that’s an improvement in the team. Him and Bissouma look really good together. I think he has put himself right in there. I think he will play in the next game, not just because he scored. You have an all-round player there.”

Skipp will be a success under Postecoglou

It’s been five years since Skipp made his Tottenham debut, yet it still feels as though he hasn’t cemented his place in the XI.

During that period, he has gone out on loan, as well as having four different managers, not including Ryan Mason, in the dugout. That doesn’t help matters.

But if Spurs can stick with Postecoglou for the long term, then Skipp will be a success under the club’s summer appointment.
