Stewart Downing has revealed that Jonathan Woodgate told him everybody at Liverpool is so excited by the emergence of Harvey Elliott.

The Reds made headlines when they signed the 17-year-old attacker from Fulham some 18 months ago.

Elliott got a little bit of game time during his first season at Liverpool but he is really shining on loan at the moment.

He joined Blackburn Rovers for the 2020-21 campaign and five goals, along with 11 assists, ought to illustrate that he has rapidly adapted to such a difficult and physical division.

At 17, there is clearly much more to come from the youngster.

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Woodgate is close to Liverpool’s director of football Michael Edwards.

And Downing has revealed to Goal.com that Woodgate claims there is such high hopes for Elliott from Edwards at Anfield in the long term.

The former England winger said: “I know [Bournemouth manager] Jonathan Woodgate well, and he’s quite close to Michael Edwards. He asked me about Harvey when he came to Blackburn, and I was like he’s brilliant!’

“Woody told me they have high hopes for him at Liverpool, and I can see why. But he knows better than anyone that he has a big job on his hands to get into the team.”

The good news for Elliott is that this loan spell will do him the world of good.

The bad news is that we’re still talking about Liverpool here and nudging Mo Salah or Sadio Mane out of the team regularly just isn’t going to happen anytime soon, which might mean that a second loan – this time to a Premier League club perhaps – may await him next term.
