Speaking on the LadBible TV YouTube channel, Alan Shearer has made a late case for Dan Burn to get into the England squad.

The towering centre-half has been absolutely fantastic for Newcastle over the past year. The former Brighton man joined the Magpies in January and he’s been imperious at the back ever since.

Whether he’s been utilised at left-back or at centre-half, there’s no striker in the league that can hand-on-heart say that they’ve gotten the better of Burn in a Newcastle shirt.

Shearer says that Burn has been sensational, and he says that he has to give him an honourable mention as an outside candidate to go to the World Cup.

Burn to Qatar

Shearer spoke about the Newcastle ace.

“One other name I’d like to throw in is Dan Burn. Carra has mentioned Coady and Tarkowski at Everton, if you’re talking those two then I have to chuck his name in because he’s been sensational for Newcastle whether that’s at left-back or at centre-half,” Shearer said.

Good option

Burn would actually be a brilliant option for England to have.

He’s versatile – he can play at full-back or at centre-back, he’s a great leader, he’s experienced and he’s a huge set-piece presence.

Factor in that he also has plenty of experience in playing in a back five during his time at Brighton, and you’re looking at a player who could be a real asset for Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Unfortunately for Burn, it’s very rare for an uncapped player to earn their first call-up in a World Cup squad, so it is unlikely that he’ll be headed to Qatar, but based on form and suitability, he’s certainly a player that should be under consideration.
