Michael Owen says Son Heung-min has been a ‘serious player for some years’ for Tottenham Hotspur after he added to his goal tally on Monday night.

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur punished an error-prone Fulham, with Son Heung-min pouncing on two poor attempts from Marco Silva’s side to play out from the back, as he helped himself to a goal and assist.

That’s seven Premier League goals for the season (transfermarkt), only Manchester City’s goal-crazy striker Erling Haaland has more – it was previously suggested that Son ‘took it personally’ when Harry Kane left.

Former England striker Michael Owen knew how to find the back of the net during his peak years and he spoke about how Son Heung-min can score goals from ‘anywhere’, as he told Premier League Productions (23/10/23 at 8:55 pm).

Last season, after winning the Golden Boot, things fell off for the 31-year-old as he only scored ten Premier League goals.

But fast forward to the present and he will easily surpass that number in a few weeks to prove the transformation and change of form he has had this season.

Throughout Son Heung-min’s time as a Spurs player, he has always showcased the ability to score with his so-called ‘weaker foot’, with Owen still unsure as to what that is and how it’s an ‘unbelievable’ skill to have.

What is Son Heung-min’s weaker foot?

“I think it’s important to recognise Son’s role in this, not just his finish,” said Owen. “But his angle of pressing here.

“To take that touch off his back foot, then that finish, the goalkeeper knows where it’s going to go, the crowd know where it’s going to go and Son knows where it’s going to go. But it doesn’t matter.

“When you hit it that accurately, I mean is such an unerring finish, it’s a brilliant goal.

“He has got form (when it comes to winning the Golden Boot). I mean he can score goals from anywhere, can’t he? He is quick, skilful and two-footed. Somebody told me the other day that he scored more goals with his weak foot than for anybody else in Premier League history and I had to ask them ‘which is his weak foot?’

“I mean he is so ambidextrous, it’s unbelievable. But this is a serious player and he has been for some years.”

Son Heung-min – one of Tottenham’s greatest

There was a lot of talk about Harry Kane wanting to win a trophy and not being able to do so at his boyhood club, hence why he left.

But many seem to forget Son and the impact he has had on the club following his £22 million transfer in 2015 (FourFourTwo).

That fresh-faced star, who first arrived under Mauricio Pochettino’s stewardship, struggled in his first campaign at the club.

But it was one of the very few minor blips the South Korean star would face because he has been out of this world for Tottenham since then.

Whenever Son heads for the Spurs exit door, he will go down as one of the club’s best-ever because he deserves such a tag.

Now it’s a case of trying to end the second half of his Spurs career with a trophy because if anyone deserves it, it’s the player himself.
