Richards Keys says Harry Maguire would be ‘happy’ to leave Manchester United during the 2023 summer transfer market amid claims Tottenham Hotspur want to sign him.
Despite donning the Manchester United captain’s armband this season, Harry Maguire has played second and even third fiddle under Erik ten Hag and there are suggestions that he is free to leave Old Trafford.
But it has also been claimed by talkSPORT that he wants to ‘stay’, which was debunked by beIN SPORTS presenter Richard Keys on Twitter who wrote: “No he doesn’t. I’m sure he’d be happy to move on but not unless United pay him what he’s due. He’s got a contract so they’ll have to honour it. Aren’t clubs always asking that players do that? The boot is on the other foot here.”
Four years ago, as Maguire was about to hit the peak of his powers, Manchester United splashed £80 million on the centre-back (BBC Sport), a world-record fee for a defender, at the time.
But it’s fair to say that his move has been an error-prone nightmare and it’s just getting worse and worse by the week.
Added to that, at the age of 30, he should be playing on a regular basis, with only 759 Premier League minutes to his name this term, but instead, he is warming the bench and the signs suggest that he will continue to do so.
Maguire needs to leave
For the sake of his own career, and the longevity of it, Maguire needs to head for the exit door this summer, but will he be open to offers? Tottenham are supposedly keen on his services.
The thing here is that the hard-hitting defender could happily sit on his current big-money contract, at the end of the day, he has every right to do so because he was offered that money.
Added to that, his England spot isn’t being threatened because even if Maguire retired from football tomorrow, Gareth Southgate would still select him for Euro 2024, so when the money is racking in and your international selection is still firm, then why would you leave?
But boot Maguire out of the England set-up today and he will be running out of Manchester United in next to no time and trying to find a new club.
