Writing in his column for Sportskeeda, Paul Merson has been discussing Virgil van Dijk after his imperious performance against Manchester City.

The Dutchman was back to his best against City at the weekend as Liverpool kept just their third clean sheet of the season, and he played a huge part in that.

Erling Haaland stayed firmly in his pocket throughout the game, while his long passing was often the spark of any attack from the Reds.

Merson was incredibly impressed by van Dijk, stating that he looked back to his best on Sunday, labelling him as a Rolls Royce.

Merson lauds van Dijk

The pundit hailed van Dijk’s performance against City.

“Look at Virgil van Dijk yesterday – he’s back to being an absolute Rolls Royce. He was up against the best centre-forward in the world yesterday and was outstanding at the highest level,” Merson wrote.

Stay at that level

If Virgil van Dijk can stay at that level for the rest of the season, then Liverpool won’t have any problem in terms of challenging for the biggest trophies this season.

The Premier League may be slightly out of reach for the Reds, but if van Dijk is at his best, the Merseyside club should be contenders for both domestic trophies and the Champions League once again.

Van Dijk is such a vital cog in this Liverpool machine, and when he’s playing his best football, Jurgen Klopp’s side are almost impenetrable at the back, while his passing range unlocks so many opportunities in the attack, especially when Mohamed Salah is on song.

Sunday proved that Liverpool are still capable of beating any team in world football, and if they can keep up that level of form it surely won’t be long before they’re back in and amongst the top four.
