Chris Sutton told BBC’s 606 programme that Ollie Watkins is an ‘upgrade’ on the strikers Aston Villa had at their club last season.

The 25-year-old made a big-money move to Villa Park in the summer and re-united with Dean Smith after he previously purchased him when from Exeter when he was Brentford boss.

There’s no doubt that Watkins standout game has been his hat-trick against Liverpool and he will be eager to cause havoc against them again on Friday in the FA Cup.

Watkins has been pretty unlucky in recent weeks, in regards to not being able to find the back of the net, but Sutton still feels the ‘all-round’ player has the qualities to score more goals in the Claret & Blue.

“I think he’s an upgrade on the strikers that were there last season,” said Sutton.

“I think he’s a really good all-round striker. He had a couple of headers, didn’t he?! [against Manchester United]. I think he should have scored that.

“But I think that’s a really smart piece of business. I think Dean Smith has done a brilliant job – I think he will score goals.”

The currently injured Wesley was Villa’s main man up front last season before his season was ended last January against Burnley.

Ally Samatta was purchased as a replacement for Wesley during the winter transfer window, and given that he was sold in the summer, it says everything about his performances during his brief time in B6.

Keinan Davis was another option used, but he is still trying to find his feet in a Villa shirt, but has shown many promising signs that he can become a top-quality team player in the near future.
