What a signing Diogo Jota has proven for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards spent £45 million on the Portugal international back in the summer of 2020.

Jota enjoyed a prety decent first season at Liverpool, netting 13 goals across all competitions.

However, the 25-year-old is looking a different animal at the moment.

So far, Jota has struck 17 goals from 30 appearances across all competitions and with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah missing for the past five weeks, the Portuguese attacker has really stepped up when needed.

He scored both of Liverpool’s goals in a 2-0 win over Leicester City at Anfield last night.

And Reds legend Stevie Nicol has described him as an ‘absolute nightmare’ for opposition defences.

He told ESPN: “For a defender he’s an absolute nightmare. You never know where he is. He never stays in one place. All of a sudden the ball will pop up in the box and guess who’s there first – Diogo Jota. He has that natural instinct of knowing where to be at the right time and from a defender’s point of view, absolute nightmare.”

Getting better

Eyebrows were definitely raised when Liverpool shelled out so much on a player who was good for Wolves – definitely good – but he wasn’t exactly a superstar.

However, he is looking absolutely sublime under the German manager and the frightening thing is, Jota’s only going to get much better.

At 25, Jota is nowhere near the peak of his career yet and given that speed isn’t a massive part of his game, this is someone who could potentially continue to play at an extremely top level for the next decade.

Easily.
