Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven has hailed his teammate Cristian Romero as a “world-class player”.

Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have started both of Tottenham‘s first two Premier League games together at the back, and the Dutchman thinks he can learn a lot from his centre-half partner.

Speaking in an interview on talkSPORT, he said: “We played now two games together and we find really well with each other on the pitch and off the pitch, so I think that also helps when you have a good relationship with someone off the pitch.

“And of course, what you say, he’s a world-class player. He won the World Cup. I think that’s a dream of everyone, so yeah he’s a really good centre-back and I think I can learn a lot from him.”

Van de Ven and Romero were able to keep a clean sheet last time out, preventing Manchester United from scoring in Tottenham’s 2-0 win against Erik ten Hag’s men.

Their next challenge will be Bournemouth when Spurs travel to the Vitality Stadium on Saturday to take on the south coast side.

Cristian Romero praise justified

Romero certainly is a top defender and showed as much last season. He was definitely one of Tottenham’s better players during that disappointing campaign for the north London club.

The 25-year-old made 2.5 tackles per game in the Premier League, more than any other Spurs defender (WhoScored). He also recorded 1.6 interceptions, which was the highest average in his squad.

Romero is an important player for Tottenham and has been a key figure for the Argentina national team as well.

His contribution to their 2021 Copa America triumph was described as “extraordinary” by Lionel Messi, while he has since gone on to help his country win the World Cup.

It is no wonder, then, that Van de Ven looks up to Romero and is hoping to learn from him while at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after joining Ange Postecoglou’s team.
