Jamie Carragher has stated that Cristian Romero is a ‘top player’ after he impressed him during Tottenham’s 5-1 win over Newcastle United on Sunday.
During one moment in the game, Romero stopped Allan Saint-Maximin from bursting into the area, before blocking Joe Willock’s almost-certain goal, which left Carragher amazed during his commentary stint on Sky Sports.
Signed in the summer transfer market when Nuno Espirito Santo was in charge, Romero was brought in to fill a number of big voids left at the back for Spurs.
Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have left Tottenham in recent windows and someone, either within or from the market, was needed to replace what they brought to the table.
It’s fair to say that Romero is showing those signs, as Carragher reacted to the Argentine’s moment of magic yesterday.
“I just think we have just seen the difference between a good defender (Romero) and a bad defender (Emerson Royal),” said Carragher.
“Saint-Maxmin on that far side, he goes past Emerson Royal as if he’s not there. Romero deals with it. The ball is flashing around. What a block (for Joe Willock’s shot five yards from goal). He’s a top player him.”
Slowly but surely, the jigsaws of Antonio Conte’s system are starting to fall into place.
Hugo Lloris, Romero, Eric Dier, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski can claim that they are now regular starters under Conte.
That’s some going for Spurs because it shows that the Italian is making a difference on the training pitch.
But, it also proves, added with a few more summer transfers, then this side can go places in the near future.
