What a night it was for Arsenal hitman Eddie Nketiah on Tuesday.
The Gunners striker fired England Under-21s to a 2-1 victory over Turkey.
Nketiah doubled his country’s lead on 88 minutes by dinking home after being set up by Tottenham Hotspur’s Ryan Sessegnon.
In doing so, the Arsenal star, who had missed a penalty minutes earlier, secured his 14th goal in 12 games for the Young Lions and has moved above Alan Shearer as his country’s all-time leading goalscorer at that level.
Manager Aidy Bothroyd said via The Guardian afterwards: “Eddie’s a huge talent, a genuinely nice person. He’s great off the pitch for us and on the pitch he takes no prisoners. He’s a real warrior.
“To surpass Alan is a huge achievement.”
It is indeed a big achievement but hopefully for Nketiah, he won’t score many more than 14.
That’s because the 21-year-old will surely have one eye on earning a senior cap sooner rather than later.
Nketiah, who has two goals for Arsenal in all competitions this season, has it all to do in order to make Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2021, but the talent is certainly there and a goal-laden campaign in North London may just put him in the frame.
Still, his focus will definitely be on helping Mikel Arteta’s side for now, but the knock-on effect of that could be international recognition and he’ll hope he can push on from here.
