Alexandre Lacazette has been named captain of Lyon after re-joining his former side this summer, with the French striker being released by Arsenal at the end of his contract in late June.
Speaking to the press via Ligue 1’s official website, Lacazette and Lyon manager Peter Bosz announced that the 31-year-old striker will captain the French giants for the upcoming season, with the attacker wearing the armband for the Gunners last season following the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January.
Bosz said when asked about why he chose Lacazette: “We waited until the end of pre-season to choose our captain. We have gone with Alexandre Lacazette because of his experience. He is not afraid to speak his mind. He is a natural leader. That is why we have chosen him.”
With Martin Odegaard replacing the Frenchman as skipper of the Gunners and in doing so becoming one of the youngest captains in the club’s history as well as the joint-youngest in the Premier League this season alongside Declan Rice and Lloyd Kelly, Lacazette’s impact won’t be missed too much in north London.
As well as finding a replacement captain, Arsenal have already managed to find a successor for Lacazette in his position in Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazilian having an outstanding pre-season where the forward bagged seven goals across the summer for the Gunners.
Indeed, whilst Lacazette was once hailed as a ‘terrific’ player for Arsenal by Mikel Arteta, the decision to allow the striker leave has so far been the correct one, yet with the forward being named captain for Lyon, there’s a good chance that the forward could be about to have his best season in years for his boyhood side.
