Amazing how quickly things can change in football.

Just a fortnight ago, Javier Hernandez went on record to state that he was prepared to leave West Ham United for the sake of first-team football.

In an interview with Spanish outlet Marca, he was asked whether he would consider leaving next summer if he did not get more game time, and he replied: “I don’t know, even this winter!”

Some Hammers fans publicly slated Hernandez on Twitter following the comments, with one joking that he would be “happy to drive him to the airport”.

Since the start of December, however, the Mexico legend has scored three goals – a brace in a 3-0 win over Newcastle and one in the 3-2 triumph over Crystal Palace.

The Hammers have won their last three Premier League games in a row and are now 11 points clear of the relegation zone, with a springboard to break into the top half of the table.

Hernandez, meanwhile, is now feeling a lot happier and, speaking to the West Ham website, expressed his joy at finally getting some significant game time.

“I’m trying my best,” Chicharito said. “I’m enjoying playing football, that’s what I love most and thankfully the points and goals are coming as well. Hopefully this run keeps going.”

It is worth going back to the Marca interview to see one quote which not only indicates how important regular game time is for the 30-year-old, but also to contrast with his present comments.

“Right now everything is negative because of what happened last season (eight goals in 33 games) and what is happening now (two in 11). I am doing all that I can to have a place here,” he had said.

From “right now everything is negative” to “I’m enjoying playing football, that’s what I love most” – looks like things have changed for the better for both player and club, and perhaps it may mean the Little Pea will continue to be a top shooter at the London Stadium beyond the end of the season.
