Tottenham Hotspur are expected to be busy during this summer’s transfer window.

Spurs enjoyed a fairly successful campaign in the Premier League this term, and despite enduring the disappointment of narrowly missing out on title glory, their fans will be pleased with the progress the club has made over the past three years.

Mauricio Pochettino will be under no illusions, however, regarding the size of the task ahead of him, as he looks to improve his already strong squad, and turn Tottenham into a team who can challenge for major honours on all fronts.

One particular area of the Argentine’s group which is in need of attention is the forward department, with Vincent Janssen proving that he is woefully inept at the highest level, and is in no way shape or form good enough to be considered as Harry Kane’s understudy.

So the addition of a top class striker will surely feature highly on Pochettino’s wish-list this summer, and with Spanish newspaper AS claiming that Spurs are ready to launch a £25.7 million bid for Atletico Madrid’s Kevin Gameiro, it seems as though the Lilywhites have already identified a primary target.

Whilst this has obviously not been confirmed, it would be an extremely strange acquisition for Tottenham to make, especially with Pochettino’s penchant for signing young, hungry players with a point to prove.

At 30, Gameiro is arguably already past his best in terms of athleticism, and that could prove to be a major problem, should he move to the Premier League.

The robust nature of England’s top flight has proven to be too much for the majority of foreigners who have arrived on these shores – especially those who have been on the wrong side of 30.

The north London outfit have been down this road before, shelling out a similar amount for Roberto Soldado in the summer of 2013.

The Spaniard was 28 at the time, two years younger than Gameiro, and he struggled badly to adapt to life in England.

Spurs would be much better served in signing a young striker, with experience of playing in the Premier League, who can learn from Harry Kane, and whilst that will be easier said than done, it could be a decision that would reap huge benefits in the future.

If the reports regarding their interest in the Atleti man turn out to be true, however, Tottenham could be on the verge of making another big mistake in the transfer market.
