Gareth Barry hinted to the Express and Star last year that a return to Aston Villa could be possible towards the end of his career, and now Steve Bruce reportedly wants the midfielder.

The Daily Mirror claim that Villa will make a move for Barry in the summer, if they are promoted.

Barry has been at West Bromwich Albion this season, but has been criticised by supporters at the Hawthorns for showing a lack of professionalism.

The veteran midfielder could now be added to Villa’s team for next term, if they win the play offs.

And Barry’s past comments suggest that a move back to Villa Park is a definitely possible.

“I do get that asked a lot [if he’d ever go back to Villa],” he said. “You never say never but Everton is my sole focus at the moment.

“I look out for their results all the time. The majority of my friends are from Birmingham and supporting either Villa or Blues.”

Barry made almost 450 appearances for the claret and blues in his younger years, after graduating from their academy system.

The 37-year-old would offer Steve Bruce’s side experience in the middle of the park, which could be vital if Villa return to the top tier.

Villa have narrowly missed out on automatic promotion, and are guaranteed to finish in fourth spot – regardless of whether they win on the final day against Millwall or not.
