‘Here we go’: Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham target is headed elsewhere, medical booked in

Tottenham Hotspur seemingly won’t be signing Yann Sommer this month as Bayern Munich look to have won the race for his signature.

The Swiss international was reportedly of interest to Spurs heading into the winter transfer window, but an injury to Manuel Neuer has seen Bayern spring into action and seemingly land the 34-year-old.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Bayern are set to sign Sommer on a contract until 2025 and a medical is booked in for the next few hours.

Sommer is set to join Bayern rather than Spurs, and we can’t help but question whether he’s made the right decision here.

Yes, he’s probably going to win a league title and potentially the Champions League with Bayern this term, but once Manuel Neuer is back from injury, he will be relegated to the second-choice goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, at Spurs the goalkeeping position is seemingly up for grabs after a litany of recent errors from Hugo Lloris have cost Spurs vital points in vital moments.

Although, saying that, at the age of 34, Sommer probably knows that the clock is ticking on his career, and while being Spurs’ number one for a few years is alluring, the chance to win major silverware with Bayern over the next two years was probably too good to turn down.

Whether or not Sommer can dislodge Neuer as Bayern’s number one remains to be seen, but it has to be said that it’s unlikely. The German remains one of the game’s great goalkeepers, while he’s also a bona fide legend in Munich.

Spurs’ hunt for a long-term Lloris replacement goes on and after links to the likes of David Raya, Robert Sanchez and Seny Dieng in recent weeks, it may not be long before we see a new glovesman arrive in north London.
