Liverpool have seen Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones emerge through their ranks, but not everybody can tread that same path.

Some players face Liverpool rejection at a young age like West Ham United’s Aaron Cresswell, whilst others have to fly the nest and make a name elsewhere – such as Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Conor Coady.

In the case of Herbie Kane, he completed a permanent move away from Liverpool in October, joining Barnsley on a four-year deal.

The 22-year-old clearly felt it was time to move on after loan spells at Doncaster Rovers and Hull City, with just two Liverpool appearances to his name.

Kane will now hope to settle down and kick on with the Tykes, but he has been looking back on his spell with the Reds.

Liverpool raided Bristol City to sign Kane in 2013, luring him away from his hometown and all the way up to Merseyside, seemingly believing that he would be a star of the future.

That hasn’t quite happened for Kane, despite impressing in development football and out on loan, with Liverpool eventually feeling that he wouldn’t make the grade – which is no great shame given the quality of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Now though, Kane has told Barnsley’s matchday programme Grove Streetas quoted by The 72 – that life at Liverpool ‘wasn’t the best’, and he’d stay at Bristol City if he had the chance to make the decision again.

Kane noted that things were promised to him when Liverpool signed him that simply weren’t kept, and whilst he was brutally honest about his time with the Reds, he believes the experience set him up for life in the Football League.

“It’s not something I’ve really looked back at before,” said Kane, “But I think with reflection, I’d probably stay at Bristol City if I had to make the same decision again. In terms of Liverpool, I’ve got to be honest, it wasn’t the best. A lot of things are promised to you when they’re trying to sign you, but nothing ever came of it. But that can be football in general to be honest.”

“The only way I can explain what it was like for me there was how when you’re playing as a kid and you’re picking the teams, and you’re the last one picked. It was that kind of feeling. It wasn’t the best for me there. But it was valuable experience and I probably wouldn’t be here at Barnsley without it,” he added.
