Henry Winter, the chief football writer for The Times, has told Sunday Supplement that the FA has held talks with the former Liverpool captain over the chance to coach younger age groups.

It has been Steven Gerrard’s potential return to Liverpool that has been widely reported in the British press over the past 24 hours after he posted a cryptic Instagram post.

In the post, Gerrard seems to suggest that his days at LA Galaxy are numbered and in a farewell message to LA Galaxy fans he thanked the city and supporters for the love he has received since arriving in America.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp only added fuel to the fire by suggesting that the door is always open for the 34-year-old to return whenever he would like and it now looks inevitable that he will one day take up a coaching role at the club.

According to Winter, the FA have spoken to the former Three Lions skipper about a coaching role.

“This is not just about Liverpool,” Winter said. “There are ramifications for England as well.

“At some point he will get involved with one of the England age groups teams. Maybe he will occasionally appear with the senior team because that would be fantastic for the younger players.

With his contract up at the end of the MLS season Gerrard future appears to be in England, but where and with whom remains to be seen.
