Shay Given praised Miguel Almiron for his ‘Henry-like’ finish during Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.

The former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper joked on Premier League Productions (20/04/22 at 10:15 pm) that Newcastle are ‘heading for Europe now’.

That’s six wins on the bounce at St James’ Park for Eddie Howe’s side and further proof that he has done a remarkable job since taking over Steve Bruce.

The Magpies are sitting 11th in the Premier League table – one point behind ninth-placed Leicester City.

It’s crazy to think that this very same side couldn’t even win a game of football for a number of months and now they are flying in England’s top flight.

Nonetheless, it was Almiron’s curling left-footed effort that sealed the points for Newcastle yesterday, as Given is hoping it will provide the 28-year-old with the much-needed ‘confidence’ that he needs.

“We are heading for Europe now,” joked Given. “What a brilliant finish from Almiron.

“He looks like he has scored 20 goals this season. Shirt off. I think it’s Guimarães also involved in the build-up. Fantastic volley to play Almiron through.

“That’s a brilliant finish. Henry-like, but from the other side. He just bends it around the goalkeeper. No chance for him.

“You could see the relief in his face. He would have expected this season to come with more goals. Hopefully, we talk about confidence in football, that will give him a huge lift. The job Eddie Howe has done at Newcastle is absolutely brilliant.”

The January transfer window has, no doubt, helped Eddie Howe in clearing the dark clouds over Tyneside.

But one of the most impressive things he has done is improve a number of players that were previously struggling.

Joelinton is perhaps the standout, Jonjo Shelvey is another bringing more consistency to his game, whilst Fabian Schar has also looked solid at the back.

Added with it all, the Toon Army faithful are watching a forward-thinking and exciting brand of football that hasn’t been seen on Newcastle shores for years.
