German giants Bayern Munich have ended Celtic’s hopes of progressing through to the knockout stages after winning 2-1 against the Bhoys on Tuesday night at Parkhead.

Bayern took the lead in the 22nd minute through Kingsley Coman, who pounced on the mistake from Dedryck Boyata.

Celtic fought brilliantly and got the equaliser after the break, thanks to a goal from Callum McGregor. However, Bayern quickly took the lead again, with Javi Martinez heading in the winner.

Former Celtic player and club legend Henrik Larsson said that Brendan Rodgers’ men can be proud of the performance put up against the German champions. However, he feels that the defending could have been a lot better, especially for Bayern’s opening goal.

What has impressed him most is the positive attitude and self-belief among the players. He adds that the Bhoys were “too passive” against PSG, but they were confident against Bayern.

With PSG defeating Anderlecht 5-0 in the other Group B game, Celtic cannot finish within the top two. However, they can still qualify for the Europa League knockout stages.

“Celtic can be proud of the way they handled themselves in this game,” said Larsson to the Daily Record (printed edition; page 52). “It’s just a shame they made the mistake for the first goal, it was conceded far too easily. If the ball is there to be headed then just go and head it.”

“I thought that Celtic’s equaliser was terrific though. They kept a hold of the ball and it really was a great finish from Callum McGregor. For the second Bayern goal if they could have prevented the cross but it was a terrific header by Javi Martinez.

“It’s a question of Celtic believing they can do it at this level and from the start of the game tonight it looked as though they did believe. Last time I saw them against PSG here they were too passive but this time they were positive.”
