Speaking to ESPN, Josh Onomah has been discussing his former Tottenham teammate Marcus Edwards.

The young winger returns to north London on Wednesday evening for a Champions League game against his old side, and, inevitably, there has been plenty of discussion about his spell at Spurs.

By and large, most pundits have been agreeing that Spurs letting Edwards go was a big mistake given his talent and potential, but Onomah sees things in another way.

Indeed, the Fulham midfielder says that Edwards leaving Spurs was the best move he could’ve made, stating that his spell in Portugal has helped him a lot.

Edwards right to leave

Onomah spoke about the winger’s decision to leave Spurs.

“The very first time I saw him at Sunday league he was dominant. Cutting inside, dribbling past players and that’s followed him throughout his career,” Onomah said.

“He was never afraid to take on first-team players and he showed his quality in training. All of the first-team lads could sense that.

“It was the best thing for him to move to another country away from distractions and it’s helped him a lot. He’s playing in the Champions League, scoring goals and this move has helped him develop into a young man.

“I feel like anyone who is born in London dreams to play in the Premier League, he’s one of them and that’s something that is on his mind and something that he wants to accomplish.”

Proved his point

Edwards was at a bit of a crossroads in his career when he left Spurs.

As Onomah says, he was viewed as a player who was easily distracted and perhaps not fully focused on the game.

However, moving to Portugal proved that he’s taking his career very seriously, and it’s allowed him to get his head down and kick on in Europe.

A Premier League return surely isn’t too far away for this young man, and he’ll be returning as a much more refined and mature player if he does come back.
