Another influential figure has just left Celtic.

The Scottish giants revealed last night that Nick Hammond had quit his role as head of football operations.

Hammond had played a big role in Celtic’s recruitment over the past two years.

And with the Hoops languishing 20 points behind newly-crowned champions Rangers, who ruined their Old Firm rivals’ 10-in-a-row bid, it was always going to be difficult for Hammond to remain in Glasgow, particularly after Neil Lennon’s resignation earlier this calendar year.

The Bhoys’ transfer business hasn’t been anywhere near good enough and this decline has led to a decline on the field, with the Gers now comfortably ahead of Celtic as a team and as a project.

Here’s how fans of the Parkhead club reacted to Hammond’s resignation last night:

This is good news because it either allows Celtic’s next manager to sign his own players or at least work in conjunction with somebody else on the transfer front.

It remains to be seen who they hire as a long-term Lennon replacement, with Roy Keane, Chris Wilder and Eddie Howe among those linked.

But a fresh start is important and with Hammond out of the picture, there’s more of a clean slate to work from for the new custodians this summer.
