Chris Sutton has suggested in The Daily Record that Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster will join Celtic in the summer transfer window if the Glasgow giants “stump up the goods”.

The former Celtic striker, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport and BT Sport, believes that Forster will find the Hoops more appealing than clubs in England who reportedly want him this summer.

According to The Sun this month, Arsenal are looking at signing the 32-year-old England international as a potential replacement for Emiliano Martinez.

The Daily Record reported earlier this month that Celtic want to sign the goalkeeper this summer, with the player himself open to a move to the Hoops, but Southampton are hoping for a bidding war.

Forster spent the 2019-20 campaign on loan at Celtic from Premier League club Southampton.

Sutton wrote in The Daily Record: “Forster is wanted by clubs in England and there is talk of him being a target for a top-four outfit, but there’s no way he’d be replacing the guys between the sticks at those clubs.

“He’d be back-up keeper and, having wasted almost two years of his career on a bench at Southampton, does he really need to be doing that again at this stage of his life?

“Forster is hardly going to tell his grandkids about the day he was wearing a trackie while getting a Champions League medal. Or tell them about the save me made against Stoke’s Under-23 side on a Tuesday night.

“Big games and big pressure at Celtic brings out the best in him and he’ll sign if Celtic stump up the goods. I’m sure of it.”

Permanent Celtic move?

Forster is a very good goalkeeper who was one of the best players for Celtic this past season.

With the Hoops aiming to win the league title for the 10th season in a row in 2020-21, the Englishman will find a move back to Celtic Park very appealing, but one suspects that it will come down to whether the Glasgow giants can meet Southampton’s asking price.
