Speaking on his Podcast, Phil Hay has been discussing Cody Drameh after he joined Cardiff City on loan from Leeds United.
Leeds’ squad is paper-thin as it is, so it was something of a surprise to see the 20-year-old right-back being shipped out on loan, especially as United only have one recognised senior right-back in the squad, Luke Ayling.
However, Hay is led to believe that it was the player and his agents who were pushing for this move, claiming that the defender wanted to go out and get some regular football.
Despite Drameh’s departure on a temporary basis, Hay claims that Leeds still have high hopes for his future and that he’s expected to return to the club in the summer.
What’s Hay said about Drameh?
The journalist shared what he knows about the defender’s situation.
“I very much get the impression that this was driven from Drameh’s side. The message from Leeds at the start of the window was that none of the 23s would be going, and even on Sunday when this broke, the club were saying that decision hadn’t been made on it. I was given the impression that due to the injuries it wasn’t really feasible,” Hay said.
“The situation at the weekend was that they were undecided about that, but there have been conversations with his agents, and it seems to me that it was very much the case that Drameh wanted to go and get games.”
Hay touched on Drameh once again a few minutes later:
“I can see why a short-term loan to Cardiff would appeal to him. There’s no option in the loan for Cardiff to take him permanently, the message was very much that he’ll come back at the end of this and they still see Drameh as a really talented player, but I think this is difficult to spin this as a decision that the club wanted to take.”

Needs to play
While it would be nice for Leeds to have more depth at right-back, we can absolutely understand why Drameh wants to go out on loan.
The defender, quite simply, hasn’t played enough senior football, despite the fact he’s been touted for big things for quite some time.
Yes, he’s a regular in the U23s, and he’s played for the first-team at Leeds on occasion this season, but at the age of 20, he needs a taste of the men’s game, and a loan to the Championship is perfect for him.
Hopefully, he’ll be able to come back next season and establish himself at Elland Road.
