Andy Hinchcliffe has criticised Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Giovani Lo Celso over his constant showboating in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle United.
It was a mixed bag for the Argentina international at St James’s Park yesterday.
Lo Celso had some bright moments but to be fair, also some very poor ones and seemed to lose possession quite cheaply at times.
Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho brought him off on 88 minutes for Gareth Bale.
And Hinchcliffe, speaking live on Sky Sports’ commentary, has claimed that Mourinho probably wouldn’t have liked his excessive showboating against the Magpies.
He said: “Lo Celso is just showboating a little bit and then getting crowded out. He needs to sharpen up because you look at that Tottenham bench and the talent Mourinho has to call on. If Lo Celso doesn’t start to improve he’ll be dragged off.”
The 2-2 draw at St James’s Park was a perfect symbol of Lo Celso’s whole season, actually.
Five goals and one assist in 22 games across all competitions isn’t a great return but, then again, he has only played that number of matches due to injury.
For Lo Celso, much like Mourinho, it’s been a difficult first full season in North London, but the quality is certainly there and if he can improve consistency and fitness next term, it’ll be much better.
