Rangers will have to pay a “hefty price” to sign Heerenveen star Joey Veerman in the summer transfer window, the Eredivisie club’s general director Cees Roozemond has told the Leeuwarder Courant.
He may be only 22 years old but one of the most influential midfielders in Dutch football already appears to have outgrown the Abe Lenstra Stadion.
Voetbal International reports Rangers are looking to snap up a player who has a touch of the Steven Gerrards about him when the transfer window opens.
Veerman is also a target for an Atalanta side sitting second in Serie A.
And while Roozemond was unwilling to slap a public price tag on the head of his Purmerend-born dynamo, the Heerenveen chief did point out anyone hoping to sign Veerman on the cheap would be disappointed.
“It seems only logical to us that such a good player comes with a hefty price tag,” Roozemond says when asked about Veerman’s future.
The Frisian-based outfit were demanding £11 million when Southampton came calling a year ago. Assuming Veerman’s market value remains unchanged, Rangers would have to pay a club-record fee for the Dutchman.
With nine goals and ten assists to his name this season, Veerman is a reliable source of productivity from central midfield, whether creating chances for others or putting them away himself with a trademark drilled finish from the edge of the penalty area.
Considering Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack, Steven Davis and co are far from prolific, Veerman could give Rangers a different sort of threat in the middle of the park.
