Unai Emery has posted on Instagram that he is ‘100% committed’ to Villarreal after the interest from Newcastle United.

Speaking live from St James Park, Keith Downie reacted to that statement and has suggested the next two possible options for Newcastle – Eddie Howe and Roberto Martinez.

The Sky reporter claimed that Howe, who is currently out-of-work, would take the job ‘in a heartbreat’, as he told Sky Sports News (03/11/21 at 1:10 pm).

Whilst Belgium boss Martinez might prove to be a struggle to get out of his current contract, just like the Magpies found with Emery, according to Downie.

“There are two outstanding names that are there,” said Downie. “One of them is Eddie Howe, we know there has been interest there from inside the consortium.

“He’s out-of-work. He’s a fairly easy appointment. I think he would take this job in a heartbeat. He is someone that could potentially come in.

“The other one is Roberto Martinez with Belgium. They then have the issue with trying to get him out of his contract. It would be as difficult and expensive as it was or was likely to be with Unai Emery.

“Those are the two possibilities.”

There were suggestions that Newcastle saw Emery was the leading contender to take the manager’s job.

Even though Emery had acknowledged that there was interest from Newcastle, he made it clear that his focus is only on his current club and he will be staying put.

This is a body blow to Newcastle and their hopes of trying to find a new face to fill their mega-rich manager’s hot seat.

This is what Emery posted on his Instagram.

Newcastle’s current situation, the speed at which the takeover happened, and being winless in the Premier League, doesn’t help matters.

But it seems as though the Magpies, who have picked up one point in the two games Graeme Jones has been in charge, will head into the international break without a new manager.

This will only increase pressure and make matters worse for the new Saudi-led ownership that has replaced Mike Ashley.

This time last month, it was fireworks galore in the North East because Ashley was out of the door and the new ownership had arrived.

But there won’t be any of that this time around, because the likes of Amanda Stavley are just finding out how tough life is in the world of English football.
