Paul Merson has stated that he is ‘very shocked’ Newcastle didn’t sign new Rangers signing, Aaron Ramsey, as he told Deadline Day on Sky Sports (31/01/22 at 2:10 pm).
The Sky pundit claimed that Ramsey would have been Newcastle’s ‘best player’ if he opted for the Premier League rather than Rangers.
But what is Newcastle’s possible loss is going to be Rangers’ gain because they snapped up the 31-year-old on a loan deal from Juventus on deadline day.
After leaving Arsenal for Turin in 2019, Ramsey’s time at Juventus has been a bit of a disaster as injuries, lack of game time and lack of form played a huge part in his recent downfall.
Despite that, Merson still thinks he has quality in his boots, as he cited his ability to score from the middle of the park and why other Premier League clubs didn’t come in for him.
“I am very shocked there aren’t a lot of Premier League clubs in for him,” said Merson. “Very shocked.
“He is a player who scores goals from midfield. A good player. I am pretty shocked there aren’t more clubs.
“There aren’t many Frank Lampard’s around anymore that score goals from midfield.
“You are looking at Newcastle. They are buying players, left, right and centre. He would be their best player they bought by a country mile, in my opinion.”

Whilst Ramsey wasn’t a player Newcastle pushed for, they still had a pretty healthy January transfer window.
On deadline day itself, the likes of Dan Burn and Matt Targett added defensive quality to Eddie Howe’s backline.
Added with the likes of Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes who also arrived, not forgetting hard-hitting striker, Chris Wood.
Newcastle have spoken with their money, now it’s time to talk on the pitch because they are in a relegation dog fight.
