Charlie Austin has backed Eddie Howe to be the ‘perfect manager’ for Celtic and cannot believe suggestions he’s hearing that the job is too big for him.
The Scottish Sun reported that Celtic were set to announce Howe as their new boss this week.
But Sky Sports later claimed that the 43-year-old’s representatives have made it clear to them that he wouldn’t be returning to football until this summer and that no deal is in place for him to join the Hoops.
Austin, who plays for QPR on loan from West Bromwich Albion, has previously played under Howe for Burnley.
And the 31-year-old is shocked over hearing claims that the role at Parkhead is too big for the former Bournemouth boss, who took the Cherries into the Premier League and kept them there for a number of years in spite of financial hardship.
Austin told Go Radio: “I see people saying the job is too big for Eddie, but if you look at the managers that have been there over the last 10 years, Eddie will be the best one suited for the job. He’d be the perfect manager to go in and rebuild the football club.”
He would look a small-time appointment in comparison to Brendan Rodgers but only because Rodgers had been at Liverpool before joining Celtic.
Howe had a lot of clout in football just a few years ago following links to the likes of Arsenal, due to the brand of football that he employs.
And Austin is right – he’d be a wonderful addition by Celtic.
