Speaking to SportsLens, Ray Parlour has been discussing William Saliba’s future at Arsenal and his exploits at the World Cup so far.

The French defender has been excellent for Arsenal this season, but he’s barely had a sniff for France at the World Cup, and it doesn’t look like he’s going to break into the starting XI anytime soon.

Parlour says that he’s been surprised that Saliba hasn’t had a chance to play for France, stating that he’s been excellent for Arsenal this season.

The pundit also urged his former club to give Saliba a new contract, claiming that he genuinely thought Arsenal would lose the 21-year-old at one point.

Parlour wants Saliba to get a new deal

The pundit discussed Arsenal’s star man.

“Yeah it has surprised me and I was surprised Gabriel didn’t get a look in for Brazil as well because partnerships are so important and those two have been great for Arsenal. But it just shows you the depth that France have. The coach has gone with the experience of Varane alongside Konate so Saliba will have to bide his time,” Parlour said.

“Saliba has been excellent for Arsenal but Deschamps is trusting those he knows and has seen more of you’d imagine. But Arsenal need to get Saliba signed up because it looked at one point that he’d be off. “

Remarkable turnaround

Parlour is right, Saliba does need a new deal and it did look at one point that he would be leaving Arsenal.

Let’s not forget, when Saliba joined Nice on loan 18 months ago, he was very critical of how his development was being handled and he didn’t hold back when giving his opinions of Mikel Arteta.

However, since then, he’s improved on and off the pitch and has become a vital cog in this Arsenal machine.

He’s now undoubtedly one of the Gunners’ most indispensable players, and he deserves a contract that reflects that status.
