If listing the Premier League’s most threatening left-backs was a question on Family Fortunes, you’d think Andy Robertson, Lucas Digne and Ben Chilwell would represent answers worthy of ‘top answer’ status.

Charlie Taylor, meanwhile, might not even enter the leaderboard.

For far too long, Burnley’s number three has been undervalued and underrated outside Turf Moor. But after Monday’s outstanding, all-action display against Wolverhampton Wanderers, it’s about time Taylor got the credit his performances have deserved for so long.

It was his pinpoint cross that set up Ashley Barnes’ opener in a hard-fought 2-1 win, Taylor’s first assist of 2020/21. If Burnley’s strikers had been a little more ruthless in the final third, however, maybe we’d have noticed the York-born 27-year-old a lot earlier.

And, with Sunday’s 6-2 humbling at arch rivals Manchester United still flashing through the minds of shocked Leeds fans all over West Yorkshire, Taylor’s best display of the campaign seasoned the gaping wounds with a hearty sprinkling of salt.

Burnley paid a bargain £5 million compensation fee to sign Taylor from Elland Road in summer 2017 after the academy graduate’s contract ran down in contentious circumstances (Daily Mail).

Leeds fans were far from happy to see the highly rated full-back slip through the net three years ago.

Now, without a single left-back in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad, the Premier League’s most porous back line may be missing Taylor more than ever.
