Graeme Souness said on Sky Sports Premier League (1:30pm, February 28, 2021) that if Jurgen Klopp really wanted Timo Werner, then the striker would have moved to Liverpool and not Chelsea.

The Liverpool legend, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that Klopp did not fancy signing the 24-year-old Germany international striker.

Werner joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2020 for a transfer fee reported by Sky Sports to be worth €50 million (£43.28 million).

Sky Sports reported that Liverpool were also interested in the 24-year-old, who even held talks with manager Klopp over the phone.

Chelsea director of Marina Granovskaia told the club’s official website in June 2020 about Werner: “He is a player who was coveted all over Europe and it is no surprise, he has that rare mix of being young and exciting and yet established and proven.”

Souness said on Sky Sports Premier League (1:30pm, February 28, 2021): “I think if Liverpool wanted him, then he’d be at Liverpool.

“The German connection, they were the European champions at the time, I think that could have happened. I think Jurgen went cold on him – he never fancied him.”
