Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst admitted that it took him a while to get over a summer of speculation after Tottenham Hotspur tried to bring him to England during the transfer window, as he told De Telegraaf.

Spurs could have done with a centre-forward like Weghorst during Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat to Brendan Rodgers’ well-drilled Leicester City.

Standing at 6ft 6ins and a monster in the air, the former AZ Alkmaar and Heracles target man has ‘Plan B’ written all over him; the sort of player who would have defenders quaking in their boots when he starts to warm up on the touchline.

Tottenham were keen on the £32 million-rated Weghorst before opting instead to sign Carlos Vinicius – a more affordable alternative – on loan from Benfica.

After months of uncertainty, Weghorst has put all those questions behind him and is now fully focused and firing Wolfsburg into the European places in Germany’s top flight.

“Shortly before the transfer market closed, Tottenham Hotspur got serious,” the old-school centre-forward explained.

“Those were hectic days. You can say very boldly that you focus on your own club, but unconsciously it does something to you of course. You also saw it in my game.

“Looking back on that situation, I think sometimes you have to be satisfied. That does not mean that I do not want to make the step to the top of European (football). On the contrary.

“But I am just very happy in Wolfsburg and get a lot of appreciation here.”

Weghorst has scored 11 times in 17 matches this season and now stands fourth in Wolfsburg’s all-time list of highest Bundesliga goal-scorers.
