Gabriel Somi has made history with Ostersunds but Celtic could do with his services too.
Thankfully for Celtic, the continued excellence of Kieran Tierney means the loss of experienced left-back Emilio Izaguirre has not really been noticed this season.
Tierney has started all but one of Celtic’s 16 Scottish Premiership fixtures. But in the event of an injury or a suspension, there is a lack of experienced back-up at the champions’ disposal with the young Calvin Miller still yet to prove himself over a prolonged period in the first-team.
So perhaps Celtic should take an interest as the Edinburgh News claims that Hearts are in talks with Swedish left-back Gabriel Somi about a potential move to Tynecastle in the New Year.
The Ostersunds defender is out of contract at the end of this month so would go down as a real bargain signing. And the 26-year-old is going from strength to strength in Scandinavia, helping Ostersunds defy all expectation by qualifying for the second round of the Europa League in their first ever season in continental competition.
A quality passer with a mean set piece, Somi has even scored three and set up another two in 12 starts in Sweden’s top flight this season. So he certainly has the technical ability and attacking intent to fit in well under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.
And although Somi would not be a guaranteed starter, a back-up role to Tierney being more likely, he would give Celtic some much needed quality in reserve – which could come in handy as The Hoops aim to fight on both European and domestic fronts.
But Celtic would need to move fast with Hearts expressing their interest already.
