Rangers couldn’t reclaim top spot on Sunday afternoon, as they only drew 1-1 away at Heart of Midlothian.

Having seen Celtic thrash Ross County 6-0 on Saturday, Rangers knew they needed to win to take back first place from their bitter rivals.

A tricky trip to Edinburgh faced them though, and they fell behind early on as James Tavernier failed to deal with an Uche Ikpeazu flick-on, and whilst Allan McGregor saved Jake Mulraney’s effort, Ryotaro Meshino made no mistake with the rebound.

Rangers did haul themselves level through Alfredo Morelos, but they couldn’t find the winner as they had to settle for a point at Tynecastle.

That won’t have been what Steven Gerrard was looking for, but he did get a chance to see Hearts defender Aaron Hickey in action against his side.

Last week, The Scottish Sun reported that Rangers wanted to sign Hickey, with new director of football Ross Wilson a big fan of the Hearts full back.

Gerrard has played down the talk, as any manager would do ahead of January, and the 17-year-old had a mixed afternoon against Rangers on Sunday.

Aaron Hickey of Hearts holds off Karamoko Dembele of Celtic during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Hearts at Celtic Park on May 19, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Hickey was caught ball-watching and lost Morelos for the opening goal and could have given away a penalty on Scott Arfield in the second half, but after a patchy first period, mostly equipped himself well after the break.

Hearts fans took to Twitter to react to Hickey’s display, with some believing that his performance will have ultimately put Rangers off, even suggesting that if another, less-popular player such as Sean Clare had produced the error for the goal, they’d have been slated.

Some weren’t too happy with Hickey’s display, but others praised him for reacting well to his mistake, believing he showed great resolve for such a young player.
