Fabrizio Romano has relayed bad news for a one-time Liverpool player on Twitter.
Gini Wijnaldum quit the Reds last summer to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.
Liverpool wanted to keep the Netherlands international at Anfield but it would appear as if the two parties couldn’t agree on a new contract, with salary a likely sticking point.
So, the former Newcastle United midfielder joined the likes of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the French capital.
But in retrospect, the player might be regretting having left Liverpool – and there’s just been another blow in his post-Anfield career.
Wijnaldum found himself on the fringes of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for much of last season, only managing seven Ligue 1 starts in 2022 which, for a Premier League and Champions League winner, is quite a decline.
The French champions loaned him to Roma earlier in August in a development that Wijnaldum would’ve hoped could get his career back on track.
However, Romano has relayed ‘bad news’ for the 32-year-old.
Wijnaldum has ‘fractured his tibia’ and looks set for an extended spell on the sidelines.
Some Liverpool supporters might gloat and argue that Wijnaldum is proving that the green isn’t always greener on the other side.
But leaving aside that, it is quite a heartbreaking development for a player who just cannot seem to enjoy his football anymore, either through losing his spot in the starting lineup or unforeseen things like injury.
Since leaving England, things are simply going from bad to worse for Wijnaldum.
